They determined that when the engine was 'misfiring' it was only running on one cylinder. They checked compression which was good on both cylinders and then checked spark and found that there was no spark on the suspect cylinder.
At the advise of Honda they replaced the ignition coils and sparkplugs resistor plugs but the problem persists with intermittent loss of spark. They have tested the engine with all the tractors wiring removed and the diode line between the coils removed. Still spark comes and goes on the number 2 cylinder.

Change the plastic to rubber as these can breakdown. If its losing spark then it can only be flywheel or coils if all elecs disconnected. Hopefully the new coil gets me back in business. I can't imagine what else would cause no spark low oil sensor could but its not that. Jan 5, CNY. We have quite a few Honda's in the rental fleet. The only consistent problem we seem to have is the low oil switch. I don't think that I have ever seen a bad coil. You did try a new spark plug? Nov 23, 3, WI, Leroy. This is the main section for any technical help posts and related questions. I don't work on many twin cylinder Honda's, and this one is quite dirty, and mounted on a overly plastic protected Lawn Boy zero turn. Therefore I am not able to locate the stamped code in the block. I've got a no spark issue on both coils. I have a good strong battery. Both coils have been unplugged from the central stop diode.
I have checked the flywheel gap, changed the plugs, and added a temporary ground from the battery directly to to the cylinder head. Still no spark on either coil Are you getting any voltage off the kill circuit that would have killed the coils? I never trust ohming them as I always get different numbers. Tags: gxv Messages: 3. I'm having the super weak spark issue on both coils. I've unhooked the stop diode connectors on each coil, but that changed nothing. I can get a very small needle tip sized blue spark if the screwdriver is darn near grounding on the block. Its not enough to spark the plugs though. I think I may have a bad coil, causing the other one to ground. Odd to have 2 coils go bad at same time. I read mowerconsultants comment about bad circuitry in one coil causing a ground out in the 2nd coil.
Can somebody provide the coil resistance check process and the ranges required or direct me to the info? I've looked allover the internet and came up empty. I don't want to just part change, however, I do need the tolerances to verify. So I'm assuming thats a feature that isn't functional on this engine?

Second, if you have the coils disconnected from each other, they cant be grounding each other out. And that isnt possible in this case, since it sounds like there is an external diode pack which is on alot of Honda's.
Thats what the diodes do Kawasaki is generally the one that has problems with that since their diode is built into the coil. If the diode goes, it can cause the other coil to not fire. Lastly, the charging system has nothing to do with spark so testing it would be pointless. Thanks pugs. Then, I'm going to pull the stop diode wires and test both coils for proper spark individually. Results posted shortly. The previous owner did mention that his mechanic would wiggle wires under the engine cover and it would work sporatically, which is what had me so focused on the electronic component failure.
