Within this framework we discuss the function of Arc in regulation of actin cytoskeletal dynamics underlying consolidation of long-term potentiation LTP and regulation of AMPA-type glutamate receptor endocytosis underlying long-term depression LTD and homeostatic plasticity.
Behaviorally, Arc has a key role in consolidation of explicit and implicit forms of memory, with recent work implicating Arc in adaptation to stress as well as maladaptive plasticity connected to drug addiction.
The brain extracts information about the world that shapes our behavior and ultimately influences who we are as individuals.
The immense capacity and specificity of memory storage in the mammalian central nervous system is thought to depend on the modifiability or plasticity of synaptic connections. Understanding how neural activity patterns are translated into lasting changes in synaptic connectivity is therefore one of the most important challenges in basic and clinical neuroscience Bliss et al.
Glutamatergic synapses are capable of expressing diverse forms of plasticity in response to synaptic input, including several mechanistically distinct kinds of synaptic strengthening potentiationweakening depressionand homeostatic synaptic scaling. Key to current thinking is the requirement for new gene expression and protein synthesis in the development of enduring synaptic modifications and long-term changes in behavior, probably involving orchestrated synthesis and degradation of hundreds of proteins Lee et al.
The dendritic tree of a typical projection neuron in the adult mammalian brain contains some 10, dendritic spines onto each of which a single excitatory, glutamatergic synapse is formed. As a discrete structural, physiological, and biochemical compartment, dendritic spines offer a necessary degree of synaptic autonomy for information processing and storage.
But, since gene expression occurs in the nucleus, how does activation of a small set of synapses lead to protein synthesis-dependent modification of those synapses? One attractive mechanism for this, as originally conceived by Oswald Steward and colleagues, is dendritic protein synthesis Steward and Levy ; Steward and Reeves ; Steward and Schuman ; Bramham and Wells Through activity-dependent local synthesis and degradation of proteins, synaptic inputs may directly remodel the protein composition, and thereby the functional state, of individual dendritic spines or spine neighborhoods.
The discovery of Arc was independently reported by the laboratories of Dietmar Kuhl and Paul Worley in Link et al. Uniquely, Arc mRNA is induced by synaptic activity and trafficked rapidly to dendrites where the RNA accumulates at sites of synaptic activity and undergoes local translation Link et al.Restart command unifi
The implications from the original discovery of Arc have now been borne out in studies establishing a function for the protein in multiple forms of protein synthesis-dependent synaptic plasticity, including LTP elicited by high-frequency afferent stimulation HFS or infusion of brain-derived neurotrophic factor BDNFand LTD mediated by activation of group 1 metabotropic glutamate receptors mGluRs. Various aspects of Arc have been discussed in focused reviews and commentaries Tzingounis and Nicoll ; Castillo et al.
Here, we attempt to overview the Arc system spanning from regulation of Arc RNA and protein, to functions in synaptic plasticity and adaptive behavior such as memory storage, and maladaptive behavior such as drug addiction.
However, the signal-transduction cascades that connect synaptic activity to transcription in the nucleus are not fully understood. The first ARC was established on 5 January The Second Administrative Reforms Commission ARC was constituted on 31 Augustas a Commission of Inquiry, under the Chairmanship of Veerappa Moily for preparing a detailed blueprint for revamping the public administrative system. A good understanding of hardware function evaluation enables selection and development of architectures for specific requirements; such architectures typically make use of polynomials, tables, shift-and-add, and various other techniques.
The large number of available methods leaves users with the task of deciding when to use which method. In this tutorial, we first present a methodology and an automated system to decide which method to use, given range, precision, space, and time considerations. We show how to select the best function evaluation hardware for a given function, accuracy requirements, technology mapping and optimization metrics, such as area, throughput, and latency.
We outline the impact of hardware function evaluation with range reduction for a given range and precision of x and f x on area and speed.
An automated bit-width optimization technique for minimizing the size of operators in hardware datapaths is also proposed. As part of the function evaluation optimization challenge, we extract bit-width optimization as an easily identifiable subproblem with a wide variety of possible solutions.
Bit-width analysis can be done statically or dynamically. We show one method for static bit-width analysis based on affine arithmetic, and one method for dynamic bit-width analysis based on automatic differentiation of sets of expressions. The application of the methods presented in this tutorial can be used to optimize hardware implementation at the architecture level, the arithmetic level, and the bit level.

In this tutorial, we introduce an FPGA-based reconfigurable platform called Erlangen Slot Machine ESM and tools supporting the development of partially reconfigurable modules and their communication.
The main advantages of this platform in comparison to other platforms are on one hand the possibility for each module to access peripherals, such as video or audio in-and outputs, independent from its placement through a programmable crossbar, and on the other hand local SRAM banks for individual modules. With these advantages, the implementation of run-time reconfigurable partial modules is easier and an unrestricted relocation of modules on the device is possible.

The main goal of this talk is to propose a change in the current approach. Thus, we believe that applications or application domains, and not architectures, should drive the research in partial reconfiguration. Using this application-focussed view of partial reconfiguration, we introduce the need for high-level domain-specific design tools that enable the users to specify the behaviour of the application and how the system should react to changes in its environment.
